WHAT IS NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY?

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is an organization that highlights those students who have shown a commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students must CONSISTENTLY demonstrate these five pillars of NJHS. These five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS:

  • to create enthusiasm for scholarship
  • to stimulate a desire to help others/provide service to others
  • to promote leadership
  • to encourage responsible citizenship
  • to develop character in the students of secondary schools

Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

  • To qualify, students must achieve a minimum cumulative weighted average of 93% (no rounding) at the end of the last five consecutive quarters.
    • A 5% does NOT meet the minimum cumulative weighted average.
    • To calculate the cumulative weighted average, take the final average (all courses averaged together) for the student’s last five quarters and average those
  • Eligibility is based on Quarters 2, 3, and 4 of the previous school year AND Quarters 1 and 2 of the current school year.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Scholarship - A 93% (no rounding) cumulative GPA for 5 consecutive quarters is

    • The candidate must demonstrate participation in AT LEAST TWO school activities (clubs, sports, etc.) and/or outside activities.
    • Discipline is strongly
    • Any student who has received an in-school and/or out-of-school suspension in grades 6,7, or 8 will not be considered for induction into NJHS.
    • Any student who has a founded DASA case against them in grades 6, 7, or 8 will not be considered for induction into NJHS.
    • Teacher comments on progress reports and report cards will be considered when evaluating students for NJHS membership.
  • Leadership - In a typed or handwritten paragraph, describe a leadership role you have held within a community. Your community may take many forms, including our school, a club or organization, a music or dance program, a sports team, your family, or another group in which you are actively involved. In a minimum of eight sentences, explain how you have demonstrated leadership and made a positive contribution to that community.
  • Community Service - Candidates must show TEN HOURS of community service from the current school year.
